Polly&Me produces apparel and accessories made by eight collectives with over 500 women working in community-based spaces- the female artisans drop in to work together, or take the cloth and thread home to sew. The project is dedicated to empowering the women of Chitral by giving each of them the opportunity to share their stories, dreams, and concerns with the world and in the process, gain a stronger voice through their writing and art. Designer Sonam Dubal's Autumn/ Winter 2011 line, ‘Hidden Voices, Ancient Sounds', takes inspiration from ancient scripts and disappearing musical instruments, specifically, old Central Asian instruments and Brahmi, Pali and Dravidian scripts. "The collection focuses on simultaneity of different cultures, seperate in their own worlds, yet juxtaposed. It is the story of ancient India with its multiplicity of languages, designs, textiles and people.'

"Embroidered jackets, coats and capes with ancient scripts like Pali and Dravidian surface in languages that have lost their voices. These have been reworked in primal geometrics on velvet bodies like asymmetrical capes, formal evening jackets and pants. Instruments that have lost their sound, have been conceptualised as decorative motifs in silk for kaftans, dresses and wraps. Mirrors have been worked on as a symbolic language of dots in circles, triangles and concentric circles. Mirrors and tattoos, central in the ‘Rabari’ tradition from Rajasthan, work as symbols that reflect back to us what we have lost. The multiplicity of our spiritual traditions can be seen in the flow of Dervish style coats and long cut-worked jackets.Velvet is the primary textile for the coming winter, in black and tonalities of gray and brown. Carol Cassidy's Cambodian Project

Produced in the remote northern Cambodian province of Preah Vihear, Carol Cassidy’s Cambodia Collection accessories are expertly dyed, woven, and finished by hand, from 100% silk. Cambodia Collection scarves, shawls and sarongs offer traditionally inspired Cambodian patterns, with vibrant color palettes. The colors are striking, the texture subtle. The result: a superlative product, as unique and enduring as the artists themselves.

Though land-mine victims of Cambodia's decades-long civil war, the artisans of Preah Vihear are using their skills drawing upon a rich regional heritage of weaving. Started in 1998 with five women, the project today employs over 80 farmers, spinners, dyers, weavers and finishers. The project has a complete dye shop and modern section warping system with 38 looms. The Preah Vihear project contributes to sustainable income for the artisans. With the income from the project, the community has built homes with electricity, clean water, and put their children through school.

"We were in the Hazara district taking videos of the 2 women's groups we currently work with: HAZARA PULKARI CENTER & AL FALAH FOUNDATION. We spent time with some amazing women, including Tasleem Bibi, Project Manager for AL-FALAH. We visited one of the nearby villages up on a mountain and we were invited to see work in process by one family run by a single widowed mother whose five daughters are all sewing and embroidering. They allowed us to photograph them which is highly unusual for this province.

Al-Falah Foundation was started by 5 women who saw the basic skills of the local Hazara women and wanted to help the women with marketing their products to a wider domestic audience. They have been around for 12 years and are making significant changes in the quality of women's lives. They currently work with 1200 women in 27 villages. When we were filming at the center they were in the process of taking one of their embroiderers to see her lawyer as her husband was divorcing her and taking custody of all the children.

If a woman is divorced or widowed she is unable to work outside the home, especially in remote area such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province which is very conservative. It is estimated that 2-3 out of 100 women work outside the home. AL FALAH FOUNDATION initially acquired their location on Grand Trunk road in Haripur as it is a heavily travelled road for tourists heading north towards Abbotobad & Nathiagalli. They had hoped to have a boutique within their office complex and had made sgns and bought mannikins, but their signs were torn down and their windows painted over by men in the community not wanting such exposure for a woman's organization.

They have asked us at PTOP, to help better their marketing and design skills to an international audience and to help provide consistent work for many of these families. "

Asia Society and Soigné Kothari, owner of the Madison Avenue boutique Soigne K—featuring ready to wear and accessories by rarely available Indian designers—hosted a special reception on Wednesday, June 8th to thank the committee, supporters, friends and honorees of Asia Society’s March 2011 Gala Celebration of Asia Week, a city-wide event celebrating Asian art and attracting a discerning international clientele.

The champagne reception featured delicious Indian hors d'oeurves, encouraging guests to browse and shop Soigne's beautifully edited selection of "fusion" apparel, accessories and one-of-a-kind traditional Indian garments, with 10% of the proceeds from the evening's sales donated to Asia Society.

We have just returned from Japan and want to make a report of our journey. This particular year we felt compelled to go see our friends to show our support in this time of national crisis. Even though the carnage of the earthquake/tsunami was confined largely to the northern coastal regions, the entire country has been psychologically damaged by the experience. Stories of the painful aftermath unfolded with each visit, but the overwhelming feeling was of survival and renewal. The Japanese people are very aware and appreciative of the support extended by the American people in their time of need, particularly the emergency crews from the US military for medical assistance and in the reopening of the Sendai airport. Our friends were effusive in their gratitude.

Many stories were told about the families and friends who suffered losses in the tragedy. Some had already spent time volunteering in the rescue efforts or were scheduled to participate. One of our ceramics makers was closing down their kilns for two weeks, taking their entire crew of two dozen workers up to help with the debris removal and other tasks of reconstruction. The Sugaharas in particular are involved in fundraising efforts directed toward the reconstruction. No one remained unaffected by the disaster.

What we experienced during our time in Japan was the conspicuous absence of tourists. Never in our more than three decades of visiting Japan have we seen so few foreigners. With both international and domestic tourism almost at a standstill, a significant part of their economy is at risk. Retail business plummeted after the disaster, with most people feeling it was not appropriate to be shopping while so many of their fellow countrymen were in such peril. The great Japanese architect Tadao Ando expressed it eloquently, saying that "I think Japan needs to rethink its connection to family, love for one's country, its role in Asia and the responsibilities as an individual living on this planet." He believes that this is a potential moment for Japan to redefine itself.

At this point in time, the support that Japan seems to need most is a sense of normalcy. If you have ever wanted to experience Japan, this is the time to go and enjoy this amazing culture. It is a good time to support Japanese design and manufacturing, including drinking lots of sake! Japan will recover with dignity, and does not seek a hand out. What it most appreciates is being appreciated, just as we all do. We need to support and encourage those who most reflect our own values and ideals.

During our time in Japan, visiting all of our traditional makers, we worked together to choose and create designs for the upcoming season that reflect the best of Japanese tradition as seen through the lens of our own time. We returned with a renewed sense that our friendship and support does make a difference.

Asian American students shine at Pratt's senior jewelry critique. Emerging design talent was on full display with 4 of the 5 top prizes going to Asian and Asian American seniors. Each participant created 10-15 pieces based on their chosen theme. The work was reviewed in a gallery setting where the students designed and created display environments to showcase their collections.

Inhwa Yu captured fifth prize with her collection "memory" where silkworms and cocoons provided the inspiration for her designs.

Jina Lee was awarded fourth prize with her "sea creatures" characterized by delicate repeated elements using wire and beads.

Yoon Ah Paik took third prize with her "cactus" collection fabricated of metals and fabrics.

Lockyeon Kim was the recpient of second prize with her copper, silver and silicone collection entitled "growing".

A designer of style and innovation, Kai-Yin Lo is recognized as a pioneer for bringing a contemporary and easy-to-wear style to traditional Chinese jewelry and for elevating semi-precious stones into a mainstay in jewelry design. According to Suzy Menkes, the influential fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune, Kai-Yin bridged the divide between precious and fashion jewelry, and introduced the range to a wider audience.

Kai-Yin Lo was honored by the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, in the groundbreaking exhibition, “ The New China Chic”(Oct. 2005) Her designs have also graced a series of postage stamps released by China’s Post Office in November 2006.

Apart from being one of Hong Kong’s most successful jewelry designers, she is also a well-known historian, patron and Chinese art collector, and has written three books on Chinese art and culture. A strong interest in Chinese history led her to acquire a collection of ancient ceramics and jewelry, and it was her collections that inspired her to create her own designs with a contemporary twist.

You are known for your philosophy of balancing with imbalance. Can you explain more how this approach shapes your jewelry designs?

I balance with volume and not by matching. This conforms with the Daoist principle of Ying and Yang, light and shade, fullness and void -the last has been a major factor practised in Chinese painting - the void can speak volumes and opposing is at the same time coordinating.

Your jewelry designs grew from your interest and passion for antiques. How did you begin collecting antiques?

I studied European history at Cambridge and London Universities and I did not know that much about Chinese history till when I returned to Hong Kong from Europe, and collecting small pieces of jades and carvings in semi-precious stones was my entry. Putting these together to wear as part of my everyday life started my jewelry career and my lifelong interest in Chinese art.

You were groundbreaking as a pioneer in making semi-precious stones a mainstay in jewelry design and starting the semi-precious or bridge department in stores. Are there any new trends in jewelry that you currently see happening?

Jewelry design now merges with art pieces and materials are diverse - not necessarily precious or semi-precious. Plastic, resin, wood and metal ---all sorts of materials are used.

How has Hong Kong's culture influenced your work?

Hong Kong, an outward-looking international city with a distinctive east/west lifestyle, has shaped my vision that jewelry and, indeed, design need international flair. Being interested in Chinese arts and culture, I have retained my heritage as a foundation for modern designs for global markets.

What have been some of your biggest business challenges and what have you learned along the way?

I was in the US and international markets for 20 years - establishing myself, building a brand, pursuing a new direction in jewelry design. I did it - business, merchandising and creating. I learned a lot and this is the foundation of my knowledge on branding and knowledge on business and design. (I was lucky with the US market but it still took two years before many department store started a bridge department to house my semi-precious jewelry. Hitherto there were only 2 departments - precious jewelry with diamonds and sapphires etc was housed in the precious department and fake or costume jewelry in the costume department. Entering the Japanese market as an Asian brand-name was very trying and took 5 years). I worked and learned hard. I sold my company in 1996 just before Hong Kong reverted to China. By 2000 I wanted to enter another phase in life - to devote more time to scholarly and cultural pursuits which I did not have time for. So I confined my selling activities to private shows and left the retail market.

I understand the business side - that is why I am a champion of promoting the creative industries as propellers of economic and social development in society. I Lecture and write on this subject in international forums and as board member of the Hong Kong Design Centre and Visiting Professor of the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China's premier design academy.

You have worked on books examining the domestic realm in China, particularly the home and objects in it, and how they reveal aspects of Chinese society. Are there aspects of your own home that you feel express who you are?

My first designs stemmed from assembly diverse antique pieces into pendants and hangings, first for the home, decorating cabinets and lamps etc., then I hung them on myself and friends, then marketed these designs. I began to collect traditional Chinese furniture in the late 1980s and soon asked myself why furniture in the principal rooms in the traditional Chinese house was always placed in a certain pattern. Thus started my journey to explore the Chinese way of living, the meaning and structure of the house which is shaped by the family into a home and how the concept of home, family represents the Chinese way of living, contributing to the formation of Chinese culture and identity - hence the Chinese way of being.

The Batik of Bali is inspiring, showcasing the artistic excellence of the Balinese people. Their beautiful designs, inspired by everything from religious mythologies to everyday encounters, have spread throughout the world.

Modern batik artists incorporate a variety of subjects into their designs including objects from nature such as birds or fish as well as religious and mythological elements, accompanied by modern interpretation.

Batik is a wax resist process. Bees wax and tree resin are the main ingredients utilized for drawing the principle lines and for filling them in, with the fabric retaining its original color wherever the wax has been applied. The waxed cloth is dyed, then more wax is applied to preserve the dyed color. The process is often repeated several times, waxing then dying, then the wax is removed, producing a colorful, patterned fabric.

AsiaStore's excited to announce a selection of scholars' rocks are available for purchase online in conjunction with our Scholars' Rock Special Sale Event ! This is Kemin Hu's finest assortment of rocks we've had in our store. They range from traditional styles to more modern, east meets west pieces.

Taihu Stones. Found mostly in the vast drainage areas of Tai Lake, these limestone rocks are hard but brittle. Those formed underwater are more precious, because of their soft color and multiple linked perforations produced from years of wave and water erosion. Taihu rocks are usually large and are regarded as the best garden rocks. Small rocks are rare and meant for indoor appreciation.

Meng Stones. Meng Stones quarried from He Shan, a mountain in Quangxi Province, Meng stones in their natural state are dark gray with myriad wavelike surface wrinkles. Meng stones are similar to modern sculptural materials; as well, the dark color, hardness, and musical pitch of the stones impart a sense of modernity.

Three Gorges Stones. These stones are taken from the riverbed, beaches, mountain peaks, and gorges adjacent to the Yangtze River in the area of the famous Three Gorges. The stones are black-and-white and yellow-grey, occasionally with peculiar patterns resembling human beings, flying birds, running animals, mountains, clouds, and the sun or moon.

Ying Stones. Ying Stones are limestone with calcite deposits, often full of furrows with twisted lines on intricately textured surfaces, with dimples and pock marks. Noted for their diverse shapes, they appear to embody a thousand hills and valleys, and so are well-suited for representing a distant landscape.

One day, a feudal lord was caught in a huge storm, and took refuge under a large tree near the temple. Suddenly the man noticed Tama, repeatedly beckoning him to come inside the temple gate. He followed the cat into the temple -- just as a lightning bolt struck the place where he had been standing! Thus the cat saved his life, and the lord in turn enriched the temple, the cat, and the priest. From then on, the Lucky Cat has been considered an incarnation of Kuan Yin (the Goddess of Mercy) and is a very auspicious animal to have in the home.

AsiaStore hosted the annual 2008 Designer Showcase at the VIP opening of Asia Society's new exhibition Art and China's Revolution. Ten of our talented AsiaStore designers were on hand to present their new fall collections. Richard Tsao's beautiful Thai silk blouses were modeled by our Asia Society colleagues. Carol Cassidy showcased a stunning new collection of silks from Laos. Karen Ford introduced her latest ceramics collection, incoporating new textures and firing techinques. Nayana Jha's distictive artwork was featured in her new 2009 calendars...hot off the presses. Rita Chung showcased her exquisite pendants and handbags adorned with the Jades that she collected on our buying trip. Coomi Bhasin presented a dazzling new collection of handcrafted gold plated jewelry from Thailand. Mousumi Shaw featured her latest collection of modern sterling silver jewelry from India and Kanu, a new AsiaStore design addition, introduced the new charm jewelry collection, developed especially for AsiaStore. Meggy was on hand to discuss the innovative silk/wool textiles from Saule Bapanov of Kazakhstan with Nell and Laurie available to answer questions regarding the lovely new Lotus Arts de Vivre collection from Thailand.

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 11 Hong Kong

Today is the final day of my trip ! This morning I am meeting with my Asia Society colleagues to discuss developments on the Hong Kong center. Vernon Moore, executive director of the Hong Kong center and his colleagues, Karen and Isabella, along with Patrick Chung and project manager Cindy are on hand to review the detailed model. The newly constructed center will include our first ever AsiaStore branch, so we are meeting to discuss how best to coordinate and collaborate, maximizing retail opportunity.

What a brainstorming session ! There so much enthusiasm and creative energy flowing around the table. Initial thoughts are to maintain the overall merchandising philosophy of the AsiaStore brand which is to feature the best in Asian design and literature, showcasing the renowned brands of Asia in addition to the work of emerging Asian design talent. However we discuss the possibility of taking a more event driven focus in Hong Kong, coordinating both the retail and the cafe elements closely with the gallery and programming activities. How exciting...we all leave the meeting full of collaborative ideas !

Next and final stop is the Hong Kong Airport, marking the conclusion of a wonderfully productive trip ! I leave the city incredibly energized, anxious to follow up on all the designer meetings and product development opportunities. And thanks to the assitance of Rita, Mr Chu, Geoff and team, many of my treasures are already enroute ! Stay posted for delivery news. New York here I come !!

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 10 Macau

Another road trip ! Today we begin at the ferry station where we catch the jet foil to Macau, which sits at the tip of the peninsula attached to China. Originally gifted to Portugal, the Chinese took possession in 1999. Here the colonial Portuguese architecture sits adjacent to modern highrises and 100 year old Bayon trees are opposite newly planted palms.

I am treated to a tour of the city by Macau natives, Rita and Steve. Having grown up here, they were able to provide a wonderful insiders view of this luxury getaway. Macau spreads across several islands, so we were off and running stopping to see the areas where Rita and Steve grew up and visit their favorite haunts. We head down the main drag, San Ma Lo, ducking off into tight alleys that give me wonderful insight into the local life. Temple of the Goddess of Mercy was our first stop, where I am enchanted by the atmosphere, quickly getting into the swing of things, lighting my incense offering and requesting my blessings.

The Ruins of St Paul's and the Macau tower two of Macau's notable tourist attractions were next on our itinerary with a stop at Pousada Santiago, an old fortress, converted into a luxury hotel. and a couple of quick glimpses into some intriguing shrines.
And then there is the gambling ! I am intrigued to find out that Rita's grandfather was the first to introduce casinos to the city...now populated by numerous Las Vegas style casinos. Steve's grandfather founded the local pawn shop which has now been converted into a museum...the Pawnshop Museum, go figure !

The shopping was somewhat limited, with dried fish and newly made "antiques" (a bit of a contradiction I know !) among the highlights. And while I didn't find the shopping exceptional, the sites and the food more than make up for it. And then of course there's the gambling !

I was treated to some home cooking, Portuguese style. While I passed on the barbecued sardines, a local favorite, I was game to try the fish balls, steamed garlic clams and short ribs accompanied by a delicious glass (it might have been glasses!) of sangria. Desert was cream tarts, another local favorite.

Time to walk off the calories as we head off to explore a beutiful newly constructed temple and then climb the steap path up to a scenic plateau, home of Maju, the Goddess of Fishermen, whose larger than life statue overlooks the harbor. And of course no island tour is complete for me without a quick stop at the beach, where I had the opportunity to dip by toes into the black sands of Macau before heading off to the ferry....

Back in Hong Kong, we make a quick stop at the lady street market in Central where I select a few last mintue souveniers for family and friends. After one final sunset and a quick bite to eat, it's back to the hotel to pack and get ready for my last day in Hong Kong.

AsiaStore Buying Trip : Day 9 Guangzhou

Roadtrip...or train trip as the case may be !! We are up early, departing on the 8:00am train for the 2 hour train ride to Guangzhou (also known as Canton). Canton was one of the original 19th century treaty ports and has been a center of commerce ever since. Trade and shopping are in high gear here as we take in the shops and wares along the main drag, enroute to the wholesale market, huge multi level buildings housing floor after floor of jade, stone, silver, beads and semi precious gems. Rita and I decide to combine our creative skills, identifying some lovely stones and beads that Rita will use to design a necklace collection for us. I absolutely fall in love with the silver encased agates ! We make a final stop at a silver supplier to select chains for the agates. I am told my my the sales clerk that I "speak very good English" Not quite sure how to respond to that, but it did make me laugh !

Next stop is the outdoor Jade Market, a myriad of lanes and stalls selling jade, stones and beads as well as the occasional novelty item. I spot a huge assortment of engraved stone discs displayed on the ground in front of an enterprising entrepreneur. We negotiate our price and the fun begins! Rita and I are literally down on our hands and knees selecting the most most interesting and unique pieces that Rita will later make into beautiful pendants for AsiaStore.

We leave with our bags full and our feet tired...excited about our creations ! Back on the train for the 2 hour ride home. We arrive in Hong Kong via Kowloon, where we treat ourselves to another spectacular view of the harbor from the comfort of the Shangrila Tappas Bar.

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 8 Hong Kong

Today I'm meeting with several of our key designers brands to discuss fall/holiday assortments as well as collaborative opportunities for the season. First stop is the Pedder Building to meet with Shanghai Tang. Here Chinese design is combined with a contemporary sensibility with the brand is taking a bit of a new direction with women's design director Joseph Lee at the helm. While the core classics will continue, the new look seeks to revitalize Chinese design by interweaving it with the 21rst century resulting in a vibrant fusion of "East meets West". I'm excited about many of the new accessories collections and look forward to having a strong Shanghai Tang presence at AsiaStore for the opening of the fall exhibitions. In addition to the new accessory products, we also discussed the possibility of a special holiday sales event in early December. Watch your emails...we'll forward details as available.

Next stop the fast-paced hip neighborhood of Causeway Bay to visit with Dick So, the export manager for G.O.D. (Goods of Desire), the innovative brand, founded by Douglas Young. G.O.D. is the phonetic sound of the Cantonese slang "to live better" and Douglas infuses that philosophy into his merchandising strategy where the soul of the brand permeates every piece of merchandise. Here furniture, home accents, stationery, jewelry and accessories evoke the Hong Kong spirit, integrating Hong Kong culture with a fun, vibrant shopping experience. While the Yaumati, Newpaper and Letter Box prints are still favorites, I was excited to see the extensive range of product offerings. I especially liked the gift wrap and stationery items and love forward to incorporating them into our fall product assortment !

My final meeting of the day is at the home and studio of Kai Yin Lo. She has been quite busy with her numerous design projects, most recently with a design conference that paired 10 leading Hong Kong designers with 10 world class brands. The collaborative project shows how elements of Chinese culture have influenced and inspired distinctive design. The products resulting from this collaboration will be showcased in New York this fall. Kai-Yin Lo's distinctive style is an infusion of Taoist principles, noteably "unequal eqalibrium". Although asymmetrical in approach, balance is achieved through volume and color. The collection for fall/holiday focuses on Kai-Yin Lo's distinctive corded creations as well as a lovely grouping of semi precious stones, pearl, crystal and amber with silver accents...the pieces are dramatic and eye-catching with signature Kai-Yin Lo touches. Kai-Yin will also be joining us for a personal appearance in October showcasing an expanded collection of her work. I had the opportunity to preview some of the unique new designs she'll be featuring at the sales event...you won't want to miss this collection ! We'll be emailing you details about the fall sales event next month.

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 7 Beijing/Hong Kong

Today begins with early morning meeting with Michelle, the creative director for Geoff's company. We review all the products sourced during my Beijing visit and discuss the follow up needed to get these fabulous finds back to AsiaStore ! I have a couple of hours to kill before my plane departed for Hong Kong, so Michelle kindly offers to take me around to a few of her favorite shops. I absolutely fell in love with Spin, a unique ceramics boutique that showcases the creative inspiration of Hong Kong native (current NY resident) Gary Wang. Simple, elegant, organic and fluent are a few of the adjectives used to describe these innovative pieces. I especially like the oversized coffee mugs..the perfect cup to get you through your morning. I plan to follow up with Gary and his colleagues when I return ...we're going to have to find a way to bring Spin ceramics to AsiaStore !

As much as I'd like to continue to browse the streets with Michelle, it's time to head to the airport. I have left plenty of time as I don't want a repeat performance of my last flight...can you say 45 minutes !! The Olympic shops at the airport are hopping, there's a definite buzz in the air. I ran into the New Zealand women's soccer team on my way to the gate. There's also a group of Chinese men outfitted in Nike sport apparel....not sure what sport they play, but they do appear to be Olympic bound.

My flight is uneventful, however I do have to mention that I am pleasantly surprised to find that overseas airlines have not abandoned the customary flight amenities. No little bag of peanuts here ! I am offered a complimentary dinner including wine or beer on this 2 hour flight.

I arrive in Hong Kong on schedule. Rita is there to welcome me to Hong Kong and drop me off at my hotel which is located in the trendy Wan Chai neighborhood. After getting settled, we take a tram up a ridge of hills to the famous "The Peak", where we enjoy a glass of wine and the views of Hong Kong at night.

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 6 Beijing

Sorry for the delay in posting...there have been some technical difficulties with my wireless, but now the connection has been restored and my travel log continues ! This morning we are off to the Silk Market....it sounds intriguing, but it's more like an indoor mall than a treasure trove of textiles and silks. Nothing fabulous here. I prefer the Pearl market for it's variety of product and selection.

Next stop the Furniture Market where I do come across some interesting decorative accents. I am especially intrigued with the metallic pewter painted window frames, as well as the lacquer ladders and some lovely white stone Buddha heads. On my way out of one showroom, I notice a lovely bowl of pins and mirror covers fashioned from kimono fabrics. You're going to love these !

Over to Liulichang, also known as "cultural street" where we browse through the various shops and galleries. Calligraphy and painting supplies, tea accouterments and novelties seem to be the staples of the street. Here I am introduced to Mr Yang Shi Hua, a master scroll painter along with a third generation reverse glass painting expert. I have the pleasure of watching them and seeing their creativity unfold. The pride they take in their art is clearly visible. You don't need to understand Chinese to understand the passion they have for their work.

After a morning a browsing, we need a little sustenance so we head to a local dumpling house, to sample some Chinese "fast food"...I have to tell you they have Mcdonalds' beat !!
Before leaving Beijing I do want to take in a few of the sites, so we head over to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City to play tourist and walk around the square, posing for a couple of key photo ops before calling it a day.

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 5 Beijing

After a restful evening and a lovely breakfast buffet , I find myself fully recovered from my travel debacle ! I am welcomed to Beijing by AsiaStore supplier Geoff Carroll and his colleague Fan Fan. Geoff has kindly offered to play host during my visit, accompanying me through the marketplaces of Beijing. Geoff and his partner have been doing business out of China for the past decade and have their finger on the pulse of the city's offerings. Our day begins at Panjiayuan Antique and Curio Market, also known as the "Dirt Market". This weekend market features both permanent shops abundance of dealers whose wares are displayed on the ground under a massive tin roof. Aisles of products are grouped by category: jewelery, textiles, wall art, ceramics, calligraphy, metalware etc. Bargaining is the name of the game here, but it does appear that the dealers have upped their price expectations thanks to the Olympic traffic. We hit the aisles with mission, in search of the unique and innovative. Several hours later we feel we've ferreted out the best of the best. Our favorites...where do I begin? Lots of exciting product including wood rice carriers painted in the Tibetan style; folk art prints and coasters; agate calligraphy brushes, chops and bangles and pendants; minority silver jewelry; engraved bamboo brush pots; Mao card packs, totes, lighters, memorabilia; collectible coins and the list goes on ! It took several hours, but we've thoroughly and scoured the market. time for a quick diet coke break...a girl's got to have her caffeine !
Next stop Lady Street and then we take time to check out a couple of boutiques in the area. We conclude the day at Hong Qiao "Pearl Market" where we are on the hunt for great summer jewelry options. We are not disappointed ! Our search ends with freshwater pearls highlighted on a rubber modern cord; etched silver and glass bead bracelets; and shimmer glass heart pendants on a wire collar. With our orders placed and the market closing, we decide to call it a day. Tomorrow's schedule is finalized over dinner as Geoff treats us to a trendy Chinese feast...my taste buds are still sizzling from the spicy delights !

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 4.5 Shanghai/Beijing

I'm of to a bit of a rocky start. Not having checked my flight schedule carefully, I ended up in the wrong terminal . By the time I made it over to the correct terminal, I was told that the my flight closed 45 minutes prior to departure and it was now 42 minutes prior to departure, so I would not be allowed on board (can you say inflexible !!). Despite channeling my inner New Yorker, I could not convince the ticketing agent to allow me on the flight. I was told that the next flight departing from PuDong was at 9pm (5 hrs later). My only option was to cab it over to Hong Qiao (an hour away) where I was able to catch the 6pm flight to Beijing. From there things went rather smoothly. I arrived safely in Beijing and enjoyed the car ride through the city, where last minute Olympic preparations were underway, with billboards and banners welcoming athletes and tourists alike !

Asiastore Buying Trip: Day 4 Shanghai

Last day in Shanghai ! Rita and I head over to Xintiandi for breakfast . Xintiandi is in the French concession, where old homes have been converted to stores and restaurants. Full of charm and style, this area is home to Shanghai Tang, Simply Life and many other chic establishments. Rita and I browse through the shops and check out the product offerings.

From there we head to Han Feng's studio. Unfortunately Han Feng is in the US finalizing costumes for The Bonesetter's Daughter which will premier in San Francisco, however she has kindly asked her assistant to give us access to the studio where we get first look at the opera costumes (including the magnificent wedding dress!) as well as her new fall collection that takes it's inspiration from this exciting opera project. The shimmering wraps and scarves are a "must have" and are on their way back to AsiaStore as we speak !

Next stop, Yue-Sai Kan's new home concept, House of Yue-Sai featuring gifts and signature home items from all over the world.

Now over to the Portman for a quick browse through the exclusive shops. I especially love Lilly's boutique. She has recently engaged a Japanese designer who has done some interesting handbag interpretations.

After a lovely lunch at the popular Elements Fresh, it's time to grab my overflowing bags and head to the airport.

Goodbye Shanghai...next stop Beijing !

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 3 Shanghai

Back to the commercial haven that is Old Street, where we hit the streets in search of unique novelties. Our bargaining powers are once again tested as we negotiate with some shrewd merchants ! Thank goodness we stocked up on expandable totes as every bag we had was full to overflowing, packed full with fun treasures galore! Highlights for the day include Mao alarm clocks and smoke tins; opera mask bottles openers; hand painted floral scrolls; agate pendants with beaded accents on silk cords; Shanghai silk mini notebooks and longevity coasters as well as a wonderful collection of miniature minority tribe dolls.

We hurry back to the "Treasures Building" and duck under the gated entrance, just as they are closing the doors for the day. We dash back to Rita's jade dealer, Mr Chu,who is anxiously waiting with his wife to show us the completed jade sculptures and the jade zodiac pendants. There are smiles all around as I tell them how thrilled I am with the results! Mr Chu is a Godsend as he has kindly offered to pack and ship all my Shanghai purchases back to the States. This is always one of my biggest challenges on these trips...how to get my wonderful finds home. Thank you Mr Chu !!

It's 7:30pm and we're still going ! Our final stop of the day is with Rita's pearl supplier. Here Rita and the supplier demonstrate the fine art of pearl selection. Color, luster, shape, texture and size all
factor into the selection process. I chose a grouping of pink and white freshwater pearls that will be accented on a delicate silver filigree chains. Another quick glance around the showroom and I spot these wonderful agate pendants. Each is a dramatic free form shape highlighted with decorative silver wiring. We decide to feature the unique pieces on thickly braided silk cord.
That's it for today...time for a quick bite to eat over in Xiantiandi where we dine outdoors and take in the lively chic scene.

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 2 Shanghai

Today Rita Chung, a favorite AsiaStore jewelry designer, joins me from San Francisco. Despite the airline having lost her luggage, Rita shows up at my hotel with a big smile, full of energy and enthusiasm. She'll be accompanying me in both Shanghai and Hong Kong, with plans to introduce me to all her favorite shopping areas.

First stop is the Old City where we headed over to the Dong Tai "Antiques" Market (note I use the word antiques very loosely !). This outdoor market takes places on 2 perpendicular streets lined with stalls on both sides. Not many of the dealers spoke English, but not to worry, Rita was my interpreter/negotiator extraordinaire ! After browsing through a few stalls I got into the swing of things and honed in on some particularly lovely pieces.

My favorites included the filigree fragrance globes and the darling Tibetan silver shoes and Rita found a beautiful grouping of handmade silver buttons that she'll be incorporating into a future AsiaStore jewelry collection ! With temperatures close to 100, Rita and I decide to head indoors for a brief respite from the heat.

Next stop the "treasures" building where we scoured the 4 floors in search of our own treasures. My finds included several bamboo brush pots engraved with lovely Chinese poems. This required some long and hard negotiations, as the supplier did not seem willing to part with them. We then headed downstairs to meet with Rita's key jade supplier. Here I selected a lovely grouping jades that I'm having suspended from individual rose wood frames...spectacular ! I also spotted some carved jade zodiac pendants that the supplier will have made into necklaces. We'll stop back tomorrow to see how everything turned out !

Off to the wholesale building to catch the last half hour before closing. Despite the ailses crowded with every product imaginable, my eyes honed in on an old AsiaStore favorite. Yes Alan, the magnetic bracelets...they will be back, better than ever ! I quickly selected my colors and negotiated my purchase as the doors where closing on what was a very productive day. Though hot and tired both Rita and I are thrilled with the results. No rest for the weary as we grab a taxi and head over to the mall to check out Tofu, a new a new accessories store where Rita's designs are prominently featured. The CEO of the project is a friend of Rita's and he's invited us to his headquarters tonight for dinner and a tour of the concept.

AsiaStore Buying Trip: Day 1 Shanghai

After an early morning arrival in Shanghai (3:30am !), I am off to Tree Art Studio, the creative hub of Wang Shu Hui, a talented Shanghai ceramic artisan whose work I have admired. Wang's creation themes include clothes, food, housing and traffic. " My artworks remind people to love all the details of life". For his food creations he choses "Jiaozi", widely known as good folk food, symbolizing reunion and jubilation. I just love them ! His most recent work revolves around Mao, the perfect tie in to our upcoming fall exhibition on Art and China's revolution.

Just as I am leaving the studio, I spot some lovely hand painted discs that would make great necklaces...a must have ! Each is a unique one of a kind art piece and will be accented with a hand braided cord.

Now off to the Bund for a quick browse through the designer collections and a stop at our Asia Society offices. Then it's back to the hotel, as my jet lag is kicking in !

At AsiaStore we are always on the lookout for new and exciting products from Asia. So when our colleague Rachel Cooper, Director of Cultural Programs, traveled to Iran, we couldn’t resist asking her to bring us back some treats for the store. She did not disappoint!

Rachel visited the Bazaar in Isfahan: the prime center for the production of enamel in Iran. The art of Persian enamel, which is called mina kari, has been around for over 3,000 years. In enamel work, the surface of a particular metal is painted of colorful luster. Afterwards, suitable amounts of heat in a special furnace are needed to stabilize the color.
