AsiaStore Buying Trip :Day 12 Bali/Bangkok
Follow AsiaStore's Chief Merchandising Officer Anne Godshall as she scouts out the latest design talent in Asia.
With bags packed, I stop for one more appointment before leaving Bali. Today, I am meeting with Zayd Makarim, the talented Indonesian designer behind the Nohan (translation: beautiful things) jewelry collection which was introduced to AsiaStore last fall. Zayd spent 9 years working with John Hardy, learning the art of jewelry design/production. Over a year ago he branched out on his own, introducing his unique styling to the market.
Zayd recently moved to western Denpasar, where he has a small closet-sized workshop from which he produces the beautiful silver collection called "Buddhacurl", all pieces cast using the lost wax technique. Zayd and I discuss the design direction for summer and he shows me the silver studded wood pieces he's been working on...you'll love them! For Fall, we are looking at a new hand wrought bird's nest technique...exquisite!
Zayd and I got so caught up in discussing design, that I was late getting off to the airport. Not to worry, the flight was delayed, which resulted in me not being able to make my connection. Good news was they booked me straight through to Bangkok...bad news, the flight doesn't leave for 4 1/2 hours....Oh well!
Finally, I arrive in Bangkok where the airport has been completely transformed since my last visit. I could spend an entire day here shopping the beautiful boutiques!
